The Rise of Glamping: A Luxurious Outdoor Getaway

The glamping trend has been on the rise since the early 21st century, when people began to demand more from their camping experiences. Glamping, a combination of the words “glamorous” and “camping”, is an outdoor getaway that offers the closeness to nature associated with camping while still providing the luxury and convenience of self-contained accommodation. The concept of glamping has been around for centuries, with some of the most extravagant examples of palatial tent life in history being seen in the Field of the Golden Cloth, a diplomatic summit held in 1520 between Henry VIII of England and Francis I of France. In the early 1900s, wealthy American and European travelers on safari demanded luxury during their trips.

To meet this demand, canvas safari tents were erected with Persian rugs, plush bedding, and a chef to prepare meals. Fast forward to today, and glamping has become a popular form of experiential travel with more than 800 glamping sites on six continents. Wooden capsules, cabins, yurts, primitive country sites, car camps, air currents, small houses, RV campgrounds, glamping tents, and more are available for rent during the winter months. The British Glamping Association attributes the boom in glamping in the late 1990s to the international financial crisis which hampered travel abroad and triggered the start of the trend of holidays at home.

Platforms such as Instagram have also been instrumental in advertising glamping sites and showcasing their convenience, opulence, and creativity to a wider audience. In Quebec, using the term glamping instead of ready-to-camper helps justify a higher price for companies. So what are you waiting for? Be part of the glamping movement and go outside and open it up - but not too abruptly! For those who love the outdoors but can't sacrifice the comforts of home (or have a spouse who can't), glamping exists.
